Yoga in Northern Iceland
November 4-11, 2023
The problem with driving around Iceland is that you’re basically confronted by a new soul-enriching, breath-taking, life-affirming natural sight every five goddamn minutes. It’s totally exhausting.
~ Stephen Markley
I still don’t know why, exactly, but I do think people can have a spiritual connection to landscape, and I certainly did in Iceland. ~ Hannah Kent
Yoga and Wellness Center
The picturesque city of Akureyri is lovingly nicknamed the “Capital of North” and is the second largest urban area in Iceland after Reykjavik. Built along the fjord (Eyjafjörður), Akureyri offers a mild climate and bucolic, picturesque landscape. Across the fjord you will find a historic landmark marked by a large stone and anchor marks the place where, according to Icelandic folklore, the Vikings originally landed in Iceland. On this beautiful property now lies Knarrarberg, a newly built wellness center and event hosting property designed specifically to welcome yoga, wellness and other healing groups and retreats. The center offers a large meeting space / yoga room, massage rooms, and a meditation / relaxation hall. There are male and female showers, changing rooms, a large dry sauna and an outdoor geothermic jacuzzi. The yoga space is fully equipped with yoga mats, blocks, straps and blankets and can be heated easily for warm classes. The wellness center overlooks the fjord and mountains, and on a clear dark night you can enjoy the stars and perhaps even glimpse the Northern Lights! |
Yoga
On most days, Yoga classes will be offered by Bethany once in the morning. Wednesday will be our day off from our mats for a day long excursion. Expect a vinyasa style yoga class every morning that will energize you for whatever excursions and adventures lie ahead of us for that day. There will be an opportunity on a few evenings for a more gentle and restorative yoga practice. Of course this is your time away so by no means are any of the classes mandatory. Classes are suited for all levels and experience. |
Acupuncture Treatments
I met Brittany early on in my yoga teaching career. Her and I hit it off and jived right away and have not only remained friends throughout the years but we have successfully offered multiple workshops combining the magical goodness of both yoga and acupuncture. We're bringing this beautiful blend across the pond now as well. Her and I will offer a yoga/acupuncture workshop during our busy schedule in Iceland and in addition Brittany will be available as time permits for individual sessions if you so choose. Of course treatment is optional and will be offered at no additional cost to you. Just another perk of this magical ride to Iceland. Brittany Phillips is a certified acupuncturist who has been practicing and treating hundreds of clients for years in Carroll County, Maryland. ** I plan to work with a travel agent (who is amazing) to get the best possible airfare and travel arrangements for our group and of course with the hopes to be able to travel together.
Most will depart your home city on Friday to arrive Saturday early morning in Reykjavik (KEF = Keflavik International) then take a smaller flight from the Reykjavik smaller domestic airport to Akureyri. Your return will be the following Saturday morning from Akureyri – Reykjavik domestic, then a transfer to the International airport (Keflavik) and back home. Some of you will choose to add extra days on your own in Reykjavik before or after the retreat dates. Everyone will need to book 2 tickets to get to Akureyri, Northern Iceland. The first flight will be from your hometown to Reykjavik (Keflavik International). From here, you will either drive, or book an easy 45 minute flight from Reykjavik Domestic Airport to Akureyri. This is a different and smaller airport than Keflavik International. Don't worry, my travel agent I used for Italy took amazing care of this portion of the trip. No worries my dears. |
